Mega Drive Systems to store MIT Media Laboratory's global portrait of life in the digital age; storage solutions leader provides millions of megabytes of disk space for "A Day in the Life of Cyberspace".

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 2, 1995--Mega Drive Systems, Inc. Monday announced its sponsorship of MIT Media Laboratory's 10th anniversary celebration, providing storage systems and disk arrays to house millions of megabytes of information to the world's largest on-line event: "A Day in the Life of Cyberspace."

Joining forces with industry giants such as America Online, DEC, Intel and Quantum, Mega Drive is providing the storage backbone for this foray onto the information superhighway expected to reach over 50 million people.

On Oct. 1, a 10-day countdown will begin as researchers from the world famous Cambridge, Mass. think tank elicit and channel discussions on a wide range of topics among millions of people from around the world. On the 10th day, editors will collect, edit, and publish the best, most thought-provoking of all collected material on the World Wide Web.

"With the advent of the Internet and global point-to-point communication, we have created a forum where ideas can be exchanged freely among all human beings, regardless of culture, gender, religion, social standing or geographic location," said Alex Bouzari, president of Mega Drive. "Our company is proud to bring its support to the Media Lab by providing the systems that will store the tremendous amount of information gathered over the 10 days from millions of individuals all over the world in this once in a lifetime event."

By overcoming the technical challenges involved in preparation for the event, the company demonstrated its ability to provide storage solutions for this kind of data-intensive environment. Bouzari maintained that Mega Drive's success at configuring the complex network of storage systems necessary to securely harvest the incoming data reiterates its commitment to continually pushing the boundaries of storage technology.

"Mega Drive moved heaven and earth to pack terabytes into the Media Lab in time for the countdown, and did it almost overnight," said Michael Hawley, professor of media technology at MIT and the event's coordinator. "It would be impossible to conceive of collecting global information from Cyberspace without Mega Drive's support. But the terabytes we are using are a drop in the bucket: mass storage is what will hold the digital memory of our civilization and carry it forward. This is what industry leaders like Mega Drive are enabling."
