GOP hopes Kemp still has comeback magic

He brings hope to the GOP ticket.

The selection of Jack F. Kemp as Bob Dole's running mate iswelcome news to Republicans. Kemp, 61, is the GOP's most popular andinfluential conservative since Ronald Reagan. Like Reagan, Kemp isan optimist whose political appeal cuts across party lines.

No Republican since the Gipper has stirred more enthusiasm amongthe GOP's rank and file. At the 1992 Republican convention,delegates were asked their preference for the '96 presidentialnomination. Kemp finished first, but decided not to run.

If anyone can help Dole close the gap, it's Kemp. He will be aforceful salesman for Dole's economic package. Kemp adds excitementto …
